This is the story of a girl who doesn't want a prince charming or a king. She wants to be the queen and a kingdom to rule!
The Shadows Between Us is a Slytherin Romance, tracing our morally dark protagonists Alessandra and The Shadow King, Kallias, and their journey to fall in love.
Let's start with something beautiful. “They've never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will.”
For something claiming to be dark and morbid, this is pretty light. There are several areas of the book that is being touched from the surface and left as it is. For instance, our central characters, Alessandra and Kallias. Both of them are shown as dark & morally grey, but there is no justification given behind their behavior, their psychology. They are being simply shown it's the way both of them are. Coupled with that all the other events taking place in the plot, like the murders and missing are summoned in a not-so-great way. There are no depts, and this is what turns out to be the biggest bummer. It wasn't satisfying, it wasn't something that hit the mark.
BUT BUT, here is a thing. The reason behind why most of us may end us liking the book because of our bada$$ Alessandra. The dilemma showed between her love and hate relationship with Kallias keeps the story intriguing at the same time. And indeed both of them are capable enough to rule the world with their cunning and ambitious brain. They are 100% unapologetically bad and you will find rooting for them. Writing is pretty kinda dramatic with the conspiring plot in this fantasy world where there is a huge queue of girls waiting for the glance of the newly crowned shadow king, the balls arranged, the constant hunt for the culprit who is trying to kill the king, pretty attires and so much more. This may remind you of the early era and the royal family's culture.
The book raises one of the important and concerning issues, the sexual liberation of women. The writer very profoundly carried the topic that a women's worth is not measured by how many sexual partners she had. And focusing on the lead character for this role is actually a big pat because most of us aren't even comfortable when the lead female is found sexually active with someone else apart from the male protagonist. The other elements in this patriarchal society like women supporting other women and etc have been done properly and chances are you may end up liking the book for the same!
